- : I think I saw that Paxtron was selling the WB3.1 separate from the 3.1 ROMs (I could
- : be wrong). I was wondering how much different would it be to keep the 3.0 ROMs and
- : use them with WB3.1 as opposed to getting 3.1 ROMs and 3.1 WB (besides about $60).
- : Does anyone know?
- :
- I bought one of the 3.1 kits shortly after they first came out.
- It was one of the kits for the A4000/A1200.
- The rom that came with it was for the A4000.
- I assume the company the manufactured 3.1 (Village Tronic) told the software
- houses that A1200 users could use the A4000 roms in the A1200 but they
- would loose support for the PCMCIA port. Because the A4000 does not have a
- PCMCIA port.
-
- I was told by the seller of the 3.1 kit (Software Hut) that using the
- 3.1 kit would result in loss of the PCMCIA port.
- They did not tell me why, and I did not ask why.
- I did agree to buy the kit even though I heard I would loose
- the PCMCIA port. So when I got the kit I was surprised that the
- 3.1 kit contained A4000 roms. On looking back I should not have
- been so surprised sence I bought a kit for the A4000/A1200.
-
- Well the A4000 roms did not work in the A1200 computer.
- I could not get the A4000 roms to work in my A1200.
- I called Sofware Hut and they told me that nobody had been able
- to get the A4000 roms to work in the A1200.
-
- I was running the 3.1 os with 3.0 roms for several months.
- It worked fine for me, but the 3.0 roms did not offer some of the things
- the 3.1 roms offered like better support of overscan prefs. ie
- no more black boarders on large monitors.
- So it is definately possible to run this combo 3.0 roms with 3.1 software.
- But why bother, unless you do not have the money tt buy the entire
- 3.1 A1200 kit.
-
- Several months after I had been running the 3.1 os with the 3.0 roms,
- I saw the same place I bought the 3.1 kit from, offer an A1200 version
- of 3.1. I called and they said they could and would swap the 3.1 A4000
- rom for the new 3.1 A1200 rom, for a small fee.
- I agreed. I got and installed my A1200 3.1 rom and have been using it
- happilly ever sence.
-
- I have used the PCMCIA port (Zappo 2x CD-ROM) with 3.0 roms and os,
- 3.1 os and 3.0 roms, and 3.1 os and 3.1 roms.
- I never lost the use of my Zappo CD-ROM durring any of this.
-
- So while it was true that there would have been loss for the PCMCIA port
- in the A1200 while using the A4000 version of the 3.1 rom, this did not work.
- So AFAIK I can say that no version of the 3.1 rom that worked with the A1200
- dropped PCMCIA support. At least I do not think it would have been possible
- to install A3000, A2000, or A500 versions of the 3.1 rom in the A1200.
-
- If you have the December 1994 issue of Amiga World you may want to give it
- a look through, especially the "Denny on DOS" collumn. Software Hut
- advertised the A4000/A1200 3.1 rom kit, with loss of PCMCIA port, in this
- issue as well.
